According to this article the problem with teaching biology starts with the fact that it is an everchanging field and we can't teach students
just the basic fact we have to teach it as its suppose to be taught as problem solving. They believe, and I agree, that we have to teach kids how to think scientifically and problem solve. They talked about how the standardized tests are forcing us to teach kids facts about science so that they pass. This takes away from showing the how to use the scientific method to come to a conclusion and having the facts to back it up. With biology playing such a vital role in politics today it is important that we teach our students to think biologically to pick out important points that these politicians feed us. They have to be informed citizens that can make logical decisions when they are given a bunch of facts. Most people listen to debates about global warming and just take what is given as the truth when in fact they need to know that its not always the truth. If we can teach students the right way to attack science then we have done our job because there is no way to teach them all the facts. As a society we have come to think of smart as knowing many things when we should consider a smart person someone who can make informed decisions and sounds logical explanations for those decisions.
